Setting and clarifying expectations right away by sharing your leadership philosophy

Seasoned leaders set and clarify expectations with each new group they come to lead. They proactively set the tone and start their leadership journey on the right foot even though different leaders use different approaches. One common practice by many is sharing their leadership philosophy from the get-go. Whether they admit it or not, every leader has a philosophy that dictates how they think, behave, decide, and act.

Many experienced leaders articulate and share their leadership philosophy with the people they lead from the beginning. Their philosophy reveals their core leadership principles, beliefs, style (s), and expectations. It also guides their leadership as they make decisions, take actions, and interact with others. As a result, they quickly set the tone and put some boundaries and parameters on how they plan to lead their new team/department/organization.

Contrastingly, most emerging leaders and some senior leaders are unconscious of a philosophy that dictates behind the scene the way they lead. They aren’t proactive in assessing the kind of philosophy they should adopt for each leadership role they take, which negatively affects their ability to adjust their style to align with the new situation.

Those conscious of their leadership philosophy may neglect to set the tone and clarify expectations right away with their new team and stakeholders when they take a new leadership role.

This presentation discusses the importance of setting and clarifying expectations with key stakeholders from the get-go to start one’s new role on the right foot. It also emphasizes the need to articulate and continuously assess one’s leadership philosophy as leaders take on new roles. It also shares the most important elements to incorporate in the leadership philosophy, how to communicate, and follow through with their leadership philosophy to become predictable, consistent, authentic, and credible right out of the gate.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, participants will:

  • Recognize the importance of setting and clarifying expectations from the get-go
  • Understand the key elements of leadership philosophy
  • Articulate (refine) their own leadership philosophy
  • Learn how to share their leadership philosophy and follow-through
  • And more.
