  • Tools,
  • Templates, and
  • Samples mentioned in the book.

PLUS, it:

  • Further elaborated some of the concepts.
  • It added the author's before and after experience under each module so that you could see that you're not alone and there is hope that you will overcome the syndrome and, in the future, you'll be like Dr. AZ empowering other first-timers.
  • It also narrated a story of a first-timer under each module to show you her challenges, struggles, strengths, limitations, and blind spots, allowing you to compare yourself with the case study and see where you are doing well and where you may need to work.

You can use the manual stand-alone or as an additional resource as you study with Dr. AZ in our master class or online course.

When you read and implement what you learn from this manual:

  • Highlight,
  • Underline, and
  • Take notes on its pages.

You may also want to use it to answer the questions throughout the manual and complete the assignments at the end of each module.

You may also desire to utilize it as a reference manual where you'll return in the future to the entire manual or a particular module to REFRESH YOUR MEMORY…

Preface

"Within the first 24 months of taking a new position, 60% of new supervisors fail." Corporate Executive Board (CEB)

Part of the reason why this many new leaders fail is that many organizations throw their first-timers into deep water and watch to see if they swim or sink. It is unfortunate!

They either don't care or need to learn how to properly equip their new supervisors and managers before promoting them to a new leadership role. They need to set them up to succeed in their first-time leadership role from the get-go.

I’m glad that you aren’t one of those unlucky first-timers. You have made a wise decision to order this program.

The choice you made will pay off

Congratulations! You may be using this workbook stand-alone or complementing our Master Class or Online course on the same theme. Either way, welcome! By diving deep and using this implementation manual, you chose not to:

  • Depend on chance and wait another 24 months to see if you can survive or not while you can take sure steps TODAY that can propel you not just to survive but also thrive in the aftermath of your first-time leadership experience.
  • Swim by yourself and solo while you have available support- I'm offering it right HERE.
  • Allow your new leadership role to negatively affect your confidence, health, relationships, and performance while you can do something about it NOW.
  • Leave your Leadership or Entrepreneurship destiny to chance while you can take matters into your hands, make a smooth transition, and excel in your new leadership role QUICKLY.

You made a wise choice to take this matter into your own hands. You decided to equip yourself to:

  • Make a quick mindset shift from an employee to a leadership mentality and be in charge from the get-go.
  • Build positive psychology, demonstrate unshakable confidence, and lead your team while holding your head up.
  • Develop the necessary competencies to prove any doubter wrong, showing them that you're up to the task.
  • Use the latest leadership models, tools, strategies, and tactics to over-deliver and assert yourself as a winner.
  • Mold your personality to fit your position and feel comfortable in your own skin from the get-go.
  • Quickly build your new team and get along with other stakeholders well to be perceived as a trustworthy captain.
  • Set SMART goals right out of the gate and consistently increase your team's performance.
  • Set systems to track your and your team's progress so that you fight complacency head-on.
  • Grow your team, raise leaders, coach, and mentor to sustain growth and scale.

You will achieve undeniable results by doing the above, making a smooth transition, and excelling at your new role.

And I'm here to help... And this manual will help you achieve all of these and more…

Introducing the Instructor- Dr. AZ

Hi, my name is Dr. Assegid Habtewold. Just call me AZ. A to Z like Amazon.

Since we’ll be together for days or even weeks, let me give you a little background about myself and why I’m passionate about helping new leaders like yourself.

As you can tell from my name, I'm not originally from the US. I came from Ethiopia to the USA in 2005. I now live in Maryland. I'm an author, coach, facilitator, and speaker at Success Pathways, LLC.

A humbling journey

I was born in one of the poorest villages in Ethiopia. Given where I began my journey and how far I've come, it is humbling to find myself where I'm in life. Today, I inspire, challenge, equip, and empower leaders of world-class organizations in the US and abroad.

I’ve over a decade of experience as a learning professional with a solid track record in diverse industries. Let me give you a glimpse of my qualifications, experiences, and networks. I:

  1. Have a degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, a master’s in computer science, and a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership.
  2. Worked for an international research institute in Ethiopia as a researcher before I came to the US in 2005.
  3. Was a software engineer and worked for a multinational semiconductor corporation in the US.
  4. Trained for national seminar companies and other management and leadership consulting companies in the US and abroad.
  5. Have the following certifications: A+, Project Management Professional (PMP), Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Emotional Intelligence (EQ-i 2.0), Copywriting, and Instructional System Design (ISD).
  6. Published six books.
  7. Have been a trainer, coach, and consultant serving clients in DIVERSE industries, such as government agencies, corporations, and community organizations in the US and overseas, for over a decade.
  8. Am a member of some professional associations such as:
  9. International Leadership Association,
  10. Association for Talent Development,
  11. National Speakers Association,
  12. Project Management Institute,
  13. Meeting Professionals International,
  14. Toastmasters International, and
  15. Society for Human Resource Management.

I'm here to support you like thousands of new leaders from diverse industries and professions I've been empowering over the years. I created this program and other accompanying programs to help first-timers like yourself quickly beat the first-timer syndrome.

Introducing Anika

Anika was born in the US to Indian parents.

Off-the-chart hard skills without soft skills

She has an electrical engineering degree and was hired to work for a west coast technology company. Anika has off-the-chart technical know-how and skills highly needed for her software engineer position.

Because she was so successful in what she was doing as a professional, the company immediately promoted her to the project manager of the project she was part of.

The project has seven engineers and three other support staff. The members are diverse in their gender, age, race, and background.

Before her promotion, Anika was enjoying life and her job. But, as soon as she took the project manager role, things changed both in her life and professionally.

Being charismatic, energetic, and a hustler alone doesn’t cut it

Though passionate, hardworking, and very humble, she knew little about what it takes to become an effective leader from the get-go. She was promoted suddenly and never prepared for it.

It didn’t take long before Anika began to stress out, worry, and feel anxious, not just when she was at work but before and after work too. Her boyfriend, relatives, friends, and, most importantly, her team noticed the difference.

She was infected with 1st timer syndrome without even knowing it. The good news for her was that she got hold of my book three weeks into her new role.

Krish, her uncle who lives on the East coast, attended the presentation I gave at his professional association and immediately ordered the book for her since he had heard that she had been struggling as a new leader.

Throughout this program, I’ll narrate her story and show you the before and after scenarios.

Bestseller book that gained the support of thought leaders

This program is based on my latest book- “Overcoming 1st Timer Syndrome”, which became Amazon’s #1 bestseller within a week of its release. The book garnered the support of many thought leaders, educators, and consultants in the field of management and leadership, such as:

  1. Marshall Gold Smith, New York Times #1 bestselling author of Triggers, Mojo, and What Got You Here Won't Get You There
  2. Eddie Turner, Preeminent Authority on Emerging Leaders (Forbes) and #6 Ranked Motivational Speaker in the World on the 2021 Global Gurus Top 30 Rankings
  3. David Burkus, Thinker50 ranked thought leader and author of Leading From Anywhere
  4.  Sylvia Baffour, Author of I Dare You to Care, ranked among HubSpot’s Top Fifteen Female Motivational Speakers alongside Oprah Winfrey, Mel Robbins, and Iyanla Vanzant.
  5. And many other thought leaders, educators, consultants, and trainers worldwide.

You won’t suffer like myself and other first-timers

I wish I had had this kind of resource when I was starting. I wouldn't have suffered needlessly. I could have prevented or, at least, lessened the impacts of the syndrome against me, my teams, and the organizations I was serving. I:

  1. Worried so much,
  2. Spent sleepless nights,
  3. Experienced toxic conflicts,
  4. Stressed out,
  5. Performed poorly,
  6. Hurt my health and relationships because I didn’t know the existence of 1st timer syndrome and how to overcome it quickly.

Now, you don’t need to pass through these sufferings.

Beneficiaries of this program

In this program, you’ll learn what it takes to succeed in your new first-timer leadership position as a team lead, supervisor, manager, or new business owner.

This program is mainly written for:

  • Recently promoted team leads, supervisors, project managers, and business owners. The program enables you to overcome the first-timer syndrome.
  • Those who are in their current first-timer position for a while. This program equips you to succeed in your current position. When you pass through this program, you will gain the latest and most empowering nuggets you could implement immediately to get quick results. You could also appreciate what you have been doing right and not so right and the changes you should make to succeed in your current leadership role.
  • Aspirant first-timers.Even if you may not be in a new leadership position right now, you need this program to prepare for your next leadership position.

This program also benefits senior leaders who coach and mentor first-timers in their organizations. It gives them a curriculum, the latest leadership and management insights, models, tools, approaches, strategies, and tactics they can share with their coachees and mentees.

The three focus areas of the program

This program is designed to focus on three significant areas of leadership:

  1. Attitude and mindset,
  2. Competencies and skills, and
  3. Personality and character are mandatory to overcome the first-timer syndrome from the get-go.

I’m your tour guide, cheerleader, and a good agent

My primary role in this course is to be a tour guide. I also take a cheerleader and coach role throughout the program. You may also consider me your 'dealer' or 'agent.'

Of course, a good agent. Whenever you want to buy your first home or car, you heavily depend on your dealer or agent to guide you in the buying process.

If you have already bought your first home or car, I'm sure you may still experience some anxiety, uncertainty, nervousness, and fear when you decide to buy your next home and/or car. The difference is the degree. Your first-time buying experience was overwhelming compared to the follow-up buying experiences.

I'm here to make your first-timer leadership experience smooth and enjoyable. I fully understand what you are going through.

  • I’ve been in some first-timer leadership positions.
  • I have been facilitating many orientations for first-timers.
  • I used to travel to provide onsite and public seminars for first-time supervisors and managers for years.
  • I’ve also been coaching many first-timer supervisors, managers, and business owners.

Based on these experiences, I'll share with you in this program the insights, tools, and approaches I shared with my audience, coachees, and mentees. As your guide, I will use models, metaphors, practical examples, and step-by-step actions you should take to succeed as a first-timer team lead, supervisor, manager, or business owner.

Once again, I’m glad you decided to join this class.

Goal and Objectives of the program

The main goal of this program is to inspire, encourage, challenge, equip and empower you to make a smooth transition and excel in your current and next new leadership positions. Below are the specific objectives:

  • To help you configure/reconfigure the mindset, which will allow you to demonstrate the right attitude from the get-go.
  • To equip you with the necessary soft and people skills to lead your team effectively and get along with your managers, peers, internal and external customers, and other key stakeholders.
  • To offer you practical models, tools, approaches, strategies, tactics, samples, and templates you can use to lead your team with excellence from the start.
  • To empower you to develop the personality you need to overcome the first-timer syndrome with ease and shoulder your leadership responsibilities.
  • And so much more!
