Make a smooth transition and excel in your 1st-time leadership role

Everything 1st is scary, and leadership isn’t an exception. Taking a new leadership role isn’t an easy task. Reports show that many new supervisors, managers, and executives either quit or get fired or resign. They give up mainly because of 1st Timer Syndrome, whose symptoms include anxiety, confusion, frustration, displacement, stress, and uncertainty that follow when one takes a new leadership role.

The syndrome hurts first-timers’ health, the well-being and performance of their teams, and ultimately the success of the larger organization. To tackle these challenges, some organizations intentionally and proactively empower their new leaders to make a smooth transition and thrive beyond first-time leadership pitfalls by providing a comprehensive support system well beyond the conventional onboarding process.

Unlike those which throw their new leaders into the deep water and see if they swim or sink, these few smart organizations create transition programs for their new leaders to overcome 1st timer syndrome. As a result, such first-timers develop confidence right away, balance work-life, lead their team effectively, get along with key stakeholders, and deliver quick results from the start.

This presentation explains why the syndrome occurs; how to overcome it quickly; the mindset, skill-set, and character-set first-timers should develop immediately. It also suggests how senior leaders and HR departments should support 1st timers to make a smooth transition and excel in their first-time leadership roles.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, participants will:

  • Understand why 1st timer syndrome occurs and its impacts at individual and organizational levels.
  • Makeshift in mindset, develop the necessary competencies, and build the right personality from the get-go to overcome 1st timer syndrome quickly.
  • Appreciate the significance of going beyond the conventional onboarding approach to fully support and empower new leaders to make a smooth transition and excel in their new leadership roles.
  • Get latest insights, workable models/frameworks, practical approaches, strategies, and tactics to overcome the syndrome (if they’re 1st timers) or create support system and transition programs for their new supervisors, managers, and executives to succeed at their new leadership roles.
